The importance of ventilation and what you can do

With a greater emphasis on air sealing and stopping air leaks, homes are “tighter” than they were before. This makes moisture management more important than ever to maintain the health of your home and everything in it. Excessive moisture can cause problems such as:
  • Spots on the ceiling
  • Moisture build-up on windows which can rot window frames
  • Unpleasant odors
  • In the most extreme cases, mold.
Simply running your bath van can help your home’s ventilation. Here’s what you can do:
  • Make sure your bath fan is the correct size
  • Confirm the van is vented to the outside (don’t vent into the attic space)
  • Most importantly make sure you use the fan. An easy rule of thumb is to always run the fan while you are using the shower and for 30 minutes afterwards (contact a handyman or electrician can install a timer)
